I am a scholar of audiovisual media of the world, including film music. I enjoy writing and speaking about the cultural politics of sound and music, and move between different fields of study, including music and cinema/media studies. I love engaging music for cinema cultures of the world, and have extensive expertise in East European (with a focus on Russian music and film) and US cultures.
I am Professor of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at UNC at Greensboro. I have published books and essays on the cultural politics of audiovisual media and speak internationally in public venues and academic conferences.
My current projects include a trilogy of books on Dmitry Shostakovich's film music career, a book on musical imaginings of Russia in US cinema, global film music, and superheroism and sound in Marvel/DC films.
In June, I spent several weeks at the Library of Congress beginning archival and library research for my new book project Sounding Red: Musical Imaginings of Russia in US Cinema. This trip was funded by the Virgil Thomson Fellowship from the Society for American Music, which I received in March 2024.
In May, I completed my fellowship at the NHC in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. It was a wonderful experience, where I had the opportunity to devote time to work on the third book of my Shostakovich trilogy, tentatively titled Dmitry Shostakovich and Music for Thaw Cinema.
